Face to face delivery. To obtain accreditation in this course a practical and written assessment will be given to participants.
There are no pre-requisites, however participants must be able to converse and comprehend basic English.

Upon successful completion, participants receive a wallet card and an electronic copy of Statement of Attainment with all 4 units of competency.
These Nationally Recognised Units of Competencies describe the skills and knowledge required to enter and work in confined spaces in the resources and infrastructure industries and also cover the skills and knowledge required for safe entry to confined spaces under a work permit and for maintaining safety while working in the confined space. It covers the skills and knowledge required to work in accordance with an issued permit. It aims to ensure that people working under a permit to work understand the system, know the limitations of the permit under which they are working and comply with all the requirements of the permit and covers the skills and knowledge required to test the working atmosphere, using electronic test apparatus, to find out if it is safe for the proposed work.

RIIWHS202E – Enter and Work in Confined Spaces

Planning and preparing to work in confined spaces
  • Accessing, interpreting and applying procedures for confined space entry
  • Obtaining, confirming, clarifying and applying work instructions and safety requirements

  • Confirming and applying emergency response procedure with the stand-by person
  • Identifying, obtaining and implementing signage and barrier requirements

MSMPER205 – Enter Confined Space

Accessing confined space for entry
  • Confirming the purpose of the required entry
  • Checking the documented risk assessment associated with the entry to the confined space
  • Identifying and assessing hazards within/around the confined space
  • Identifying hazard controls and checking they are functional and appropriate.
  • Checking the incident/emergency response plan is appropriate to the job
  • Rehearsing own role in an incident/emergency response
  • Confirming and verifying that the conditions of the permit reflect the risk assessment
  • Ensuring the confined space is ready for entry
Using safety equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Securing the worksite
  • Selecting, fitting and wearing designated PPE
  • Selecting, testing and using required instruments and monitors
  • Challenge testing atmosphere/atmospheric monitoring instrument if required before entry
  • Confirming test/monitoring results show entry is safe
Work in accordance with confined space requirements

MSMPER200 – Work in Accordance with an Issued Permit

Applying for permit

  • Applying for the permit following the organisation’s requirements
Identifying the scope of the permit
  • Checking that work to be done complies with the permit type
  • Checking that the scope and location of work comply with the permit issued
  • Identifying hazards and checking that the hazard controls specified on the permit are consistent with the hazard analysis
  • Checking that preparations specified on the permit have been completed
  • Signing onto/receive the permit
Preparing for permitted work
  • Maintaining safe working conditions and environment by using available isolation procedures and safety equipment
  • Monitoring plant conditions and hazards to ensure work under the permit remains safe
  • Ensuring that appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is selected and worn, and emergency equipment is available, as required by the permit and relevant procedures
  • Inspecting work area to ensure safety and compliance with permit requirements and procedures
Working in accordance with an issued permit
  • Using required hazard reduction/control measures
  • Complying with requirements of the permit, including safety observer if required

  • Ensuring personal lock outs/tag outs/isolations are removed in accordance with procedures

MSMWHS217 – Gas Test Atmospheres

Preparing for gas testing
  • Finding out type of gas/atmosphere to be tested
  • Selecting and calibrating equipment in accordance with procedures
  • Finding out gas testing regime/sampling pattern required
  • Identifying hazards from possible atmosphere contaminants
  • Implementing hazard control measures and use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
Testing gas
  • Using gas testing equipment to test gas as required
  • Interpreting and reporting readings
  • Monitoring gas on an ongoing basis as required
  • Taking required action if readings are unacceptable
  • Communicating required actions to be taken to appropriate personnel
Maintaining equipment
