Traffic Control and Traffic Management (Combined Course)

Unit 1: Control Traffic with Stop-Slow Bat: RIIWHS205D
This nationally recognised unit addresses the competency required to control traffic using a stop slow bat to ensure the safety of construction and maintenance workers and the general public. Content includes OH&S awareness, operation, removal, communication i.e. signs and radio usage, stop / slow batten use and stages of traffic control.
Course content includes
Locating and applying relevant documentation, policies and procedures
Reading and interpreting the work instructions and planning work activities accordingly
Positioning signage and barriers
Directing and controlling vehicle traffic
Directing and controlling pedestrian traffic
Communicating to drivers and pedestrians clearly using hand signals
Using approved communication devices such as hand held radios or phones to transmit message and report of offenders
Removing or covering signs after work completion
Site and equipment safety requirements
Traffic controlling requirements and procedures
Complying with traffic management plans
Erecting traffic control signage and barricades
Communication device operations
Determining equipment types, characteristics, technical capabilities and limitations
Operational and maintenance procedures for equipment
Detailing site isolation and traffic control responsibilities and authorities
Describing the effects of travel speed and vehicle mass on stopping distances
Interpreting and implementing safe work method statement
Unit 2: Implement Traffic Management Plan: RIIWHS302D
This nationally recognised unit addresses the competency required to access, interpret and apply site traffic plan procedures, traffic management plans to ensure traffic is controlled safely and ensure the safety of construction and maintenance workers and the general public.
Course content includes
Locating and applying relevant documentation, policies and procedures
Working effectively with others to undertake and complete the traffic management plans that meet all of the required outcomes including:
Complying with written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures
Communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions
Communicating clearly and concisely with others to resolve coordination requirements prior to commencing and during work activities
Demonstrating completion of implementing traffic management plans that safely, effectively and efficiently comply with State/Territory Regulations
Identifying and selecting traffic guidance scheme according to conditions
Selecting and implementing signage and device requirements, position and display according to site plan
Monitoring and adjusting scheme according to variances in requirements
Applying procedures to deal with non-compliant crew and motorists

Traffic Control / Management Refresher
This course addresses the competency required to refresh your current ‘Control Traffic using a Stop- Slow Bat’ and/or ‘Implement Traffic Management Plans’ competency. It is highly recommended that participants complete the refresher course every three years to keep their certificate current.

Evidence of Traffic Management training is required before commencement of the course. Participants must also be able to converse and comprehend basic English.
