Traffic Control and Traffic Management

Unit 1: Control Traffic with Stop-Slow Bat: RIIWHS205D

This nationally recognised unit addresses the competency required to control traffic using a stop slow bat to ensure the safety of construction and maintenance workers and the general public. Content includes OH&S awareness, operation, removal, communication i.e. signs and radio usage, stop / slow batten use and stages of traffic control.

Course content includes

  • Locating and applying relevant documentation, policies and procedures
  • Reading and interpreting the work instructions and planning work activities accordingly
  • Positioning signage and barriers
  • Directing and controlling vehicle traffic
  • Directing and controlling pedestrian traffic
  • Communicating to drivers and pedestrians clearly using hand signals
  • Using approved communication devices such as hand held radios or phones to transmit message and report of offenders
  • Removing or covering signs after work completion
  • Site and equipment safety requirements
  • Traffic controlling requirements and procedures
  • Complying with traffic management plans
  • Erecting traffic control signage and barricades
  • Communication device operations
  • Determining equipment types, characteristics, technical capabilities and limitations
  • Operational and maintenance procedures for equipment
  • Detailing site isolation and traffic control responsibilities and authorities
  • Describing the effects of travel speed and vehicle mass on stopping distances
  • Interpreting and implementing safe work method statement

Unit 2: Implement Traffic Management Plan: RIIWHS302D

This nationally recognised unit addresses the competency required to access, interpret and apply site traffic plan procedures, traffic management plans to ensure traffic is controlled safely and ensure the safety of construction and maintenance workers and the general public.

Course content includes

  • Locating and applying relevant documentation, policies and procedures
  • Working effectively with others to undertake and complete the traffic management plans that meet all of the required outcomes including:
  • Complying with written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures
  • Communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions
  • Communicating clearly and concisely with others to resolve coordination requirements prior to commencing and during work activities
  • Demonstrating completion of implementing traffic management plans that safely, effectively and efficiently comply with State/Territory Regulations
  • Identifying and selecting traffic guidance scheme according to conditions
  • Selecting and implementing signage and device requirements, position and display according to site plan
  • Monitoring and adjusting scheme according to variances in requirements
  • Applying procedures to deal with non-compliant crew and motorists

RIIWHS205D Control Traffic with Stop-Slow Bat

This nationally recognised unit addresses the competency required to control traffic using a stop slow bat to ensure the safety of construction and maintenance workers and the general public.

RIIWHS302D Implement Traffic Management Plan

This nationally recognised unit addresses the competency required to access, interpret and apply site traffic plan procedures, traffic management plans to ensure traffic is controlled safely and ensure the safety of construction and maintenance worker and the general public.

Traffic Control / Management Refresher

This course addresses the competency required to refresh your current ‘Control Traffic using a Stop- Slow Bat’ and/or ‘Implement Traffic Management Plans’ competency. It is highly recommended that participants complete the refresher course every three years to keep their certificate current.

Evidence of previous card or statement of attainment must be supplied to qualify for refresher course. Star Training can only accept course codes

Duration

This course is delivered in three days. At the request of
Main Roads two extra units have been added to the
teaching materials. Participants will receive, together with
the Main Roads card and certificate, two statements of
attainment for the two new units of competency.

Participants must hold a white card and be able to converse and comprehend directions in basic English. A valid drivers license is also required.

RIICOM201D, Communicate in the Workplace

This nationally recognised unit is designed for individuals who are required to communicate in the workplace within the resources and infrastructure industries. This unit is appropriate for those working in operational roles.

Content includes:

  • Plan and prepare for workplace communication using equipment and systems
  • Communicate using communication equipment and systems
  • Carry out face-to-face routine communication
  • Complete written documentation

RIIWHS201D, Work Safely and Follow WHS Policies and Procedures

This nationally recognised unit is designed for individuals who are required to obtain a Main Roads Traffic Controller certification but can also be delivered as a stand alone unit. This unit is appropriate for those working in operational roles especially in the resources and infrastructure industries.

Content includes:

  • Access and apply site safety procedures
  • Apply personal safety measures
  • Apply operational safety measures
  • Maintain personal wellbeing and
  • Identify and report incidents
