Location

At an organised training facility in Geelong.

Face to face delivery. The course involves a theory and practical assessment.

 

To obtain this accreditation students must demonstrate knowledge and use of three pieces of small plant and equipment and one power source.

There are no prerequisites, however participants must be able to converse and comprehend basic English.

  • Government issued photo identification
  • Unique Student Identifier (USI)
  • Closed toe shoes
  • Appropriate PPE required for the safe operation of plant and equipment
Upon successful completion, participants receive a wallet card and an electronic copy of Statement of Attainment.

Planning and preparing for operating small plant and equipment

  • Accessing, interpreting and applying operate small plant and equipment documentation to ensure the work activity is compliant
  • Obtaining, reading, interpreting, clarifying and confirming work requirements
  • Identifying and addressing potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implementing control measures
  • Selecting and wearing personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
  • Selecting and checking for faults plant, tools and equipment appropriate for the work activity
  • Obtaining and interpreting emergency procedures, and being prepared for fire/accident/emergency

Conducting pre-operational checks

  • Selecting and using fuel and lubricants
  • Checking and adjusting fuel, oil, hydraulic fluid and water levels
  • Inspecting, securing/tightening and maintaining bolts, nuts, guards and attachment couplings
  • Checking and adjusting function of controls and gauges
  • Conducting standard start-up and shutdown procedures

Using small plant and equipment

  • Identifying site hazards associated with small plant and equipment operations and establishing appropriate controls
  • Identifying and applying operating techniques for small plant and equipment to achieve optimum output while maintaining specified tolerances
  • Operating machine to produce results within specified tolerances
  • Storing plant and equipment safely when not in immediate use

Carrying out operator maintenance

  • Preparing machine for maintenance
  • Conducting inspection and fault finding
  • Carrying out scheduled maintenance tasks
  • Processing written maintenance records

Conducting housekeeping activities

  • Clearing work area and disposing of or recycle materials
  • Cleaning and maintaining condition of equipment, ensuring suitability for use, and addressing/reporting issues
  • Processing records
