On-site at your workplace.

Face to face delivery. The course involves a theory and practical assessment.
There are no prerequisites, however participants must be able to converse and comprehend basic English.
  • Government issued photo identification
  • Unique Student Identifier (USI)
  • Closed toe shoes and appropriate PPE for site conditions
Upon successful completion, participants receive a wallet card and an electronic copy of Statement of Attainment.

Preparing for work

  • Obtaining, interpreting and confirming work requirements
  • Accessing, interpreting and applying vacuum excavation documentation and confirming work activity is compliant
  • Identifying hazards, environmental issues, assessing the risks and implementing control measures in line with workplace policies
  • Identifying and adhering to traffic management signage requirements
  • Selecting equipment and tools required for work activities and checking for faults and reporting or rectifying within scope of own role
  • Selecting and wearing personal protective equipment required for work activities
  • Completing induction procedures as required by workplace policies and procedures and job role requirements
  • Identifying and applying safety and environmental protection requirements

Completing on-site preparation and setting up job

  • Checking job scope, location and requirements with job owner and contact person as required
  • Obtaining required permits and approval and checking potential for ground contamination and nature of materials with landowner or job contact as required
  • Confirming waste management, disposal and tracking procedures required for material types are in place
  • Defining work area, checking exclusion zone, confirming trench shoring requirements and preparing worksite to comply with job and safety requirements
  • Implementing protective screening or other methods as required of containing excavation debris
  • Inspecting, assembling and checking vacuum excavation equipment according to organisational requirements
  • Completing pre-operational procedures, pre-start and checking emergency stop
  • Establishing communication processes between operators and confirming correct positioning of personnel

Undertaking vacuum excavation job

  • Starting up vacuum excavation system according to operating procedures
  • Operating equipment to meet job requirements and minimising direct contact of high-pressure water on assets
  • Monitoring hazards and activating emergency stop as required
  • Monitoring job, conditions and equipment
  • Recognising and diagnosing problems and reporting or rectifying within scope of own role

Completing job

  • Shutting down equipment according to operating procedures
  • Determining and implementing disposal, recycling and waste removal documentation procedures required by material type and clearing work area
  • Advising job owner and contact person of job completion and reporting any issues and incidents as required
  • Cleaning and maintaining condition of equipment, confirming stability for use, and reporting issues as required or addressing within scope of own role
  • Checking vehicle is clean and fit for transit
  • Refuelling vehicle, refilling with digging water as required and return to base
  • Completing required paperwork and processing written records

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to conduct vacuum excavations. It applies to those working in operational roles in civil construction. They generally work under supervision and hold some responsibility for conducting vacuum excavations.
