This Excavator and Skid Steer Loader for Experienced Operators Assessment session is designed for experienced operators who have extensive experience operating an Excavator or Skid Steer Loader, also known as a Bobcat.

This is an Assessment only session for experienced operators, if you are a beginner and require training then our 3-day beginners’ course would be a more suitable option.

This Assessment will be run from our Laverton North facility at 5 Everaise Court, Laverton North VIC

You can choose to be assessed on an Excavator or a Skid Steer Loader or combine the two machines to save during your Assessment session.

You will receive a study guide when booking. Your session will consist of a knowledge and practical assessment.

At the successful completion of your Assessment/s, you will be issued with a Nationally Recognised Competency for the machine class you have been assessed on.

Location

At our Laverton North Training facility:

Face to face delivery. The session will involve a written knowledge and practical assessment.

There are no prerequisites, however participants must be able to converse and comprehend basic English.

It is expected that participants that enrol are experience operators

Be of a fit and healthy nature to be able to complete real-life work activities.

  • Valid Government Issued Photo Identification
  • Unique Student Identifier (USI)
  • Closed toe safety boots
  • High visibility vest or clothing (this can also be provided to you).
  • Appropriate clothing as required for the weather conditions as you will be assessed outdoors. This may include a hat, sunscreen, rain jacket etc.

Upon successful completion of the Excavator and Skid Steer Loader Assessment, participants receive a wallet card and an electronic copy of the Statement of Attainment for all units completed.

Planning and preparing for excavator/skid steer loader operations

  • Accessing, interpreting and applying excavator/skid steer loader operations documentation
  • Obtaining, interpreting, clarifying and confirming work requirements
  • Identifying hazards and environmental issues, assessing the risks and implementing control measures in line with workplace policies
  • Selecting and wearing personal protective equipment required for work activities
  • Obtaining, identifying and implementing traffic management signage requirements according to standard operating procedures and safe work practices
  • Selecting required excavator/skid steer loader equipment and/or attachments and confirming suitability for work activities
  • Obtaining and interpreting emergency procedures for excavators/skid steer loaders, and be prepared for fires, accidents and emergencies
  • Coordinating and communicating planned activities with others at the site prior to commencement of work activity

Operating excavator/skid steer loader in line with established requirements

  • Carrying out prestart and start-up checks in line with workplace procedures
  • Identifying faults or defects and rectifying or reporting within scope of own responsibility and according to workplace procedures
  • Driving and operating excavator/skid steer loader using techniques suited to equipment capabilities, site and work conditions, and according to workplace procedures
  • Monitoring hazards and risks during operations, and ensuring safety of self, other personnel, plant and equipment
  • Monitoring and managing equipment performance using indicators and alarms in line with manufacturers’ specifications

Lifting, carrying and placing materials to complete work activity

  • Establishing weight of load and ensure it is within safe operational limits of the machine
  • Using lifting gear within safe working load requirements and in line with workplace requirements
  • Positioning machinery and ensuring stable and effective shift of materials according to work requirements
  • Shifting load safely and effectively, using hand, audible and communication signals, in line with workplace procedures
  • Parking up, shutting down, securing and carrying out post operational inspection of equipment in line with workplace procedures

Selecting, removing, fitting and using attachments for an excavator/skid steer loader

  • Selecting attachment for the task
  • Fitting attachment in line with workplace procedures
  • Testing attachment and ensuring correct fitting and operation
  • Using attachment within design limits and in accordance with workplace procedures
  • Removing, cleaning and storing attachments in designated location in line with workplace procedures

Preparing to relocate the excavator/skid steer loader

  • Preparing excavator/skid steer loader for relocation
  • Moving excavator/skid steer loader safely within and/or between work areas, observing relevant codes and traffic management requirements
  • Assisting loading and unloading machine from float/trailer as required by workplace procedures

Conducting housekeeping activities

  • Clearing work area and disposing of or recycling materials according to workplace procedures
  • Managing and/or reporting hazards to maintain a safe working environment
  • Completing and filing or distributing documentation in a manner that complies with workplace practices
