This Traffic Controller Course is NOT SUITABLE for individuals working for or intending to work for Traffic Control companies.

This course is designed for non-traffic management company workers, for example Utility and Telecommunications workers.  Any individual wishing to work for a Traffic Management Company as a Traffic Controller/Traffic Management Implementer, must complete the new AustRoads Training Program (TC1/TMI1). (This course can be found on the first course tile on our website).

Face to face delivery. The course involves a theory and practical assessment.

This course is designed for non-traffic management company workers, for example Utility and Telecommunications workers. Any individual wishing to work for a Traffic Management Company as a Traffic Controller/Traffic Management Implementer, must complete the new AustRoads Training Program (TC1/TMI1).

There are no prerequisites, however participants must be able to converse and comprehend basic English.

  • Unique Student Identifier (USI)
  • Closed toe shoes

Upon successful completion, participants receive a wallet card and an electronic copy of Statement of Attainment.

Traffic Control and Traffic Management

(Includes two units of competency. If you are wanting to get into the traffic management industry, these are the two units you will need. If you have any queries please contact our office).
This nationally recognised unit addresses the competency required to control traffic using a stop-slow bat to ensure the safety of construction and maintenance workers and the general public.

Course content includes

Preparing to control traffic
  • Personal protective equipment required
  • Interpreting work instructions and planning work
  • Applying worksite policies and procedures including environmental protection requirements
  • Planning and preparing for accidents and emergencies
  • Selecting tools and equipment required to control traffic
Controlling traffic and operating communication devices –
  • Using communication devices to communicate and confirm messages
  • Directing traffic using hand held stop-slow bat and hand signals
  • Monitoring traffic and make adjustments for changing traffic conditions
  • Checking and performing maintenance on communication equipment
  • Procedure for reporting offending motorists
Conducting housekeeping activities –
  • Removal or covering of signs as required
  • Cleaning, checking and storing tools and equipment
  • Procedure for reporting environmental damage
This nationally recognised unit addresses the competency required to access, interpret and apply site traffic management plan procedures, to ensure traffic is controlled safely and ensure the safety of construction and maintenance workers and the general public.

Course content includes

Preparing to implement traffic management plan –
  • Determining worksite requirements and scope of traffic management plan and traffic guidance scheme
  • Identifying and addressing and controlling potential risks, hazards and environmental issues
  • Validating suitability of traffic management plan and traffic guidance scheme and confirming requirements are met
  • Ensuring personnel are resourced and receive instructions to implement traffic management plan and traffic guidance scheme
  • Confirming communication requirements are addressed
Setting out traffic guidance scheme –
  • Installing and inspecting signs and devices according to the traffic guidance scheme
  • Inspecting traffic guidance scheme and authorising work crew to proceed
  • Confirming work crew are protected from worksite hazards
Monitoring traffic guidance scheme –
  • Confirming traffic flow is being monitored by required personnel
  • Applying adjustments to traffic guidance scheme if necessary, to maintain required traffic flow
  • Monitoring work activities and applying required measures to ensure work crew and road user compliance
  • Procedure for reporting offending motorists
Closing down work activities –
  • Removal or covering of signage, devices and equipment as required
  • Checking, cleaning, maintaining and storing tools and equipment
  • Finalising traffic work zone and closing down work site

PLEASE NOTE:

REFRESHERS ARE NOW ONLY AVAILABLE FOR NON-TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT COMPANY WORKERS

If you are a traffic management company worker and your qualification has expired after 1st March 2024, you MUST complete the new AustRoads Training Program or RPL Process.  Any traffic management company workers qualification issued after 1st March 2024, will not be recognised by the Department of Transport.

This course addresses the competency required to refresh your current ‘Control Traffic using a Stop-Slow Bat’ and/or ‘Implement Traffic Management Plans’ knowledge. It is highly recommended that participants complete the refresher course every three years to keep their certificate current.

Evidence of previous card or statement of attainment must be supplied to qualify for refresher course. Star Training and Assessing can only accept course codes RIIWHS205 (A B C D or E) & RIIWHS302 (A B C D or E)
