This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to operate truck or trailer mounted attenuators when carrying out traffic management activities in civil construction.
Planning and preparing to operate attenuator
- Obtaining, interpreting, clarifying and confirming safety requirements from site safety plan, vehicle movement plan and organisational policies and procedures and applying to the allotted task
- Accessing, interpreting and applying documentation required to operate truck or trailer mounted attenuators and confirming work activity is compliant
- Identifying, obtaining and implementing signage according to job requirements
- Selecting vehicles, plant, tools and equipment required for work activities, confirming serviceability and rectifying and reporting faults as required
- Identifying, confirming, clarifying and applying environmental protection requirements
- Obtaining and interpreting emergency procedures and identifying steps required to respond to emergencies
Conducting attenuator pre-operational checks
- Checking attenuator connection with host vehicle, tyres and brakes according to trailer mountedattenuator pre-start check
- Carrying out start-up, park and shutdown procedures according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
- Checking truck and attenuator controls and functions for serviceability and reporting and rectify any faults as required
Operating communication devices
- Adjusting communication device such as radio controls for transmission and reception
- Testing and confirming radio contact between all vehicles and handheld radios
- Transmitting radio messages according to job requirements
- Confirming communications contact after nominated period of non-contact
- Confirming radio communication is maintained between vehicles and confirming correct positioning of vehicle
Operating mounted attenuator
- Identifying site hazards associated with truck or trailer mounted attenuator operations
- Identifying and applying safe operating techniques for truck or trailer mounted attenuator according to national truck or trailer mounted attenuator guidelines
- Operating truck or trailer mounted attenuator according to job requirements
Positioning traffic controls and truck or trailer mounted attenuators
- Positioning and confirming traffic control signs and display on vehicles
- Displaying and confirming required vehicle warning lights
- Positioning vehicle according to traffic management plan, and traffic and site safety regulations
- Confirming traffic is controlled and work crew protected according to job requirements
- Moving truck or trailer mounted attenuator between worksites, observing road rules and traffic management requirements
- Confirming incidents are recorded and reported as required
Carrying out operator maintenance
- Conducting inspection and fault finding according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
- Completing required documentation according to site requirements
Conducting clean-up activities
- Confirming work area is clear and disposing of or recycling materials according to site requirements
