What is RPL (recognition of prior learning) and does it apply to me

If you are thinking about changing careers you may be looking at further study to up-skill and prepare you for your chosen new industry. Did you know that you might be able to reduce the time spent studying and in some cases even reduce the cost, by showing proof of relevant experience already gained and/or qualifications? This is called recognition of prior learning.

What is RPL?

This process is called Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and is all about showcasing the relevant transferable skills and experience you have already gained through previous work and life experiences and applying these to the new course you plan to study.

RPL must be processed tat the beginning of your course with a registered training provider.

If you are thinking of a career change – you may already be more qualified than you think! Many courses in similar industries have modules that crossover.

For example, in the trades industry courses always involve Work Health & Safety modules; the chances are if you have completed a similar module on another course, this will be recognised as meaning you are competent to not have to repeat this module again in your new course.

Does RPL apply to me?

Discuss your previous experience and qualifications with a training provider and the career path you want to pursue before you decide on a course to enrol in, they will be able to advise you on options and any RPL you may be able to apply for.

An easy way to do this is to ensure your resume is up to date with all of your qualifications and work experience and send to your training provider who will assess if you are able to apply for RPL.
