According to The Occupational Safety and Health Regulation, manual handling means ‘any activity requiring the use of force exerted by a person to lift, power, push, pull, carry or otherwise move, hold or restrain a person, animal or thing.’
How can the risk of workplace injuries be reduced?
Manual handling training will equip individuals with the knowledge and tools to do a number of manual tasks more safely, reducing the risk of injury.
The outcomes of a manual-handling course aim to:
- Minimise the risk of injury
- Knowing strategies to implement and utilise to improve workplace organisation
- Gain an understanding of the human body and its limitations when it comes to physical work
- Learn how to stretch to reduce the risk of injury
When workers are trained in manual handling they are more aware of the risks and ways to reduce the risk of injury in a workplace.
Knowledge is power and if workers are knowledgeable they will likely be more cautious to protect themselves from injury when manually moving and lifting objects in the workplace, and adhere to workplace OHS laws.
When employees are safer, any injuries that do occur are likely to be less serious.
